Introducing Global Datasets:
Data Modeling for All Embedded Dashboards and Reports

Data Library is the foundation for Explo's Semantic Layer. Save Global Datasets to be shared across all your dashboards and reports. To learn more about Data Library, check out the documentation here.

Entirely built on SQL

Explo keeps it simple and accessible by staying SQL-first. No need to learn another proprietary modeling language. This means no extra learning curve for you or your team to learn another proprietary modeling language – just focus on building dashboards using centralized, reusable SQL logic.

Consistency

Centralized SQL definitions ensure all dashboards built for the same purpose align on a single source of truth. Eliminate the headache of managing datasets and evolving business logic.

Explore

Collaboration

Share and reuse datasets across your team. Allow your team to access and use the shared Global Datasets to eliminate redundant work, and collaborate on the SQL code to ensure everyone works with consistent definitions.

Governance

Commit changes with version control to avoid potential errors and maintain consistency in business logic

Getting Started with Global Datasets

Go to the Data Library

Create your data model in Explo's Data Library - the central repository for all Global Datasets in your organization. Access the datasets that were created by your colleagues or organize them into folders by domains, themes, use-cases, or customers.

Create a Dataset

Give the dataset a meaningful name and assign it to a destination schema. This ensures it is easily recognizable.

Define the Dataset

Write the SQL logic for your dataset and define fields, conditions, and business logic.

Commit Your Changes

Save your changes. You will now document your version history and ensure every version update is traceable.

Import Global Datasets into a Dashboard

You are now ready to build! You can use both Global Datasets and dashboard-specific “local” datasets to build dashboards. Navigate to the Datasets tab in the dashboard creation page to search and import the dataset(s) you need from the Data Library.

Getting the Most Out of Global Datasets

Update Datasets

Building reusable datasets is an iterative process – when SQL logic changes, visit the dashboards using the dataset and remember to update the version to reflect the most recent updates in the dataset.

Promote Local Datasets

Create Global Datasets in the Data Library, or Local Datasets on a specific Dashboard or Report Builder. Once these datasets are ready to be used, you can “promote” it to a Global Dataset to enable other team members to use them.

Commit Messages Matter

Document any minor or major changes when saving a new version of code. Commit messages an save countless hours of potential confusion and help a shared data model.
